KEPIS - The shorter of the three styles.
Our wool top, leather brim kepis are exact copies of the popular style worn during the Civil War.
They feature the large squarish leather brim, cotton liner, kid skin sweat band,
and come with adjustable kepi straps with buckle.
Early Confederate and Union regulations called for the color of the kepi to indicate the branch of service.

| BUMMERS & FORAGE CAPS: - The taller flop-over style. These are another style of early Civil War hat. The construction is the same as a kepi except they were taller. Many started out with a pompom on the front and an inside wire frame which caused them to stand tall. Because of how uncomfortable they were, and packing into a back pack usually ruined them, the wires were removed, the pompom discarded. Thus the Civil War bummer fashion became, the top of the bummer flopping to the side or front. #HATB Solid Color Bummers - Not Available at this time |

FELT HATSAlso known today as Slouch Hats. The unfortunate soldier who was issued a kepi or bummer wore it for standing inspection, and when otherwise required. The only useful purpose it had was to keep your head warm. It did little to protect the wearer from sun, and provided even less protection from rain and snow. For this reason, lots of soldiers had felt hats. Officers also realized the uselessness of the kepis and bummers, and often accepted an alternative felt hat style. | ![]() |
#HATF Felt Hat Blank comes to you as pictured "HAT F" above. You get it wet, stick it on your head, and shape as you desire. With a little denting, squeezing, and pinching, our felt hat blanks will shape into almost all Civil War military styles, and many civilian styles too. (They are not tall enough to make Hardees) Once you have your hat formed the way you want it, let the hat dry completely so that the felt will permanently form. Now, if you wish, add an appropriate hat cord, and some hat brass, and you are done.
Gray was the most popular color with Confederate inf. and art.
Confederate cavalry used a lot of cream.
Butternut was used when gray was not available.
Union wore black felt hats.
#HATF - Specify color, size, or measurement ... $19.50.

For designating Branch and Unit
These have wires or loops on the back for attachment.
To attach, poke a hole, (using something stronger than the hat insignia wire)
insert the wire, and bend without going through inner liner.
Most insignia goes on the front of felt or straw hats, on the top of kepis or bummers.
