RANK & BRANCH INSIGNIA

CHEVRONS:

Both the Union and Confederacy used chevrons to designate the ranks of Corporal through Sergeant Major.
Our chevrons are 5/8" wide wool twill tape (not cotton - which will fade fast) mounted on Gray or Navy wool backers.

Be sure to specify branch color (Red =Artillery, Blue = Infantry, Yellow = Cavalry, Black for some Militia units), color of your sleeve (navy blue or gray),
and the rank. - They are sold and priced by the pair

When you sew these on, be sure to fold under the edges of the back patch.

Originally, chevrons were issued sewn to paper.
To apply them on your coat you would have to sew all the way around each stripe, and then rip the paper off. Since you went up in rank one stripe at a time, individually sewing around one set of stripes was not too much of a task. Only when you got a new uniform would you have to sew all your rank stripes on.
For those of you that really want to look right, buy our tape and sew each stripe directly to your sleeve. (It takes a foot of twill tape to make one "V" chevron)
